About GT-CORE
GT-CORE is the Glycosyltransferase Curated Online Resource for Enzymology: a curated, family-organised reference for the CAZy glycosyltransferases, built around the catalytic core of each enzyme — its fold class, its mechanism, and the delimited catalytic-domain sequence.
Scope
Glycosyltransferases catalyse the transfer of a sugar from an activated donor, most often a nucleotide sugar, to a specific acceptor: a growing glycan chain, a protein or lipid aglycone, or a small molecule. The CAZy classification groups them into families by sequence similarity, which correlates with fold and catalytic mechanism rather than with substrate specificity — so a single family routinely contains enzymes acting on chemically unrelated acceptors, and conversely a single biosynthetic pathway draws on enzymes from many families.
GT-CORE organises curated records by CAZy family and makes the enzymological attributes that differ within a family — donor, acceptor, localisation, metal dependence, quaternary structure — directly comparable in one table.
Intended use
- Locating a characterised family member to use as a template for construct design, homology modelling or activity comparison.
- Comparing donor and acceptor specificity across the members of one family.
- Retrieving catalytic-domain boundaries for expression construct design.
- Assembling family-level sequence sets for phylogenetic or profile analysis.
Data provenance and limitations
Records are curated from UniProtKB annotation together with structural and enzymological literature. Coverage is deliberately uneven: large families are represented by well-annotated members and, where noted on the family page, a representative subset rather than an exhaustive listing. The UniProt annotation level shown on each record indicates the evidence depth behind that entry; entries below level 4 are flagged and their curated enzymology should be treated as provisional. Absence of a value means the field was not curated, not that the property is absent.
